Where have they all gone? The number of registered boats in Brevard county is down again for the fourth year in a row, dropping another 1800+. One would like to think it would only grow but as we all know that’s not the case. With the price of a day on the water always on the rise some folks are just throwing in the towel. For 20 years I have seen the marine community stand strong in Brevard. Now one of the biggest providers of marine education is in jeopardy. The Marine Technology Program at Eau Gallie High School is possibly going to be cut. This program has strived to be the best and has always succeeded breaking new ground so that the young men and women that complete the course can walk away with accredited certification. An opportunity that was not available in my time there but none the less I was still given the tools to become a better marine tech and have been in marine management for over 15 years. That being said one would hope that the school board will see that there is a positive affect on our community and economy from the young adults that have completed this program. After all this is a coastal region with vast marine opportunities and the program lead by Jeff Frahm at E.G.H.S. is, with no doubt, one of a kind. So I ask anyone that shares the same concerns to stand up and be heard, by not throwing in the towel, and contacting your local school board representatives at Brevardschools.org .
